Q&A With Professor Mohler

  • Who can learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai, or Boxing?

Anyone can learn and even master these fighting arts if he or she is consistent in their training. We have many beginners’ classes. A student does not need to be in top condition to learn, although the training will lead to improved fitness to whatever level the participant desires. We train women and men and have students of all ages and sizes.

  • Do I need to be in good physical shape to begin training?

Absolutely not! The best time to start your journey is right now! My Beginner Programs are designed to lay a strong foundation of technique and conditioning. Whether you are a beginner or you have had previous experience, you will progress at the pace that is right for you. All new students are guided through a basic training routine that is modified to fit each individual’s needs.

  • What kind of equipment do I need to start out with?

For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you will need a Jiu-Jitsu Gi (also known as a kimono) and you may want to wear a mouthpiece although it is not required. For MMA, you will need MMA gloves, 16oz boxing gloves, hand wraps and a mouthpiece. For boxing, you will need 16oz boxing gloves, hand wraps and a mouthpiece. For Muay Thai kickboxing, you will need 16oz boxing gloves, hand wraps, shin guards and a mouthpiece. Athletic cups are also suggested for all classes, but not required. Don’t worry about where you can find this equipment. You can buy everything you need at the gym. All Items are also available to rent on your first day.

  • How many days a week can advanced students train?

We are open 7 days a week and we offer day and evening classes. You can train as many times as you like. We also offer private lessons for students who want to advance to the next level faster.

  • How many times a week do new students usually attend class?

When meeting with Professor Mohler, he will listen to your fitness and skill goals and then recommend how many days a week you should train. But in order to progress you should always train a minimum of two times a week.

  • What is the belt system for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

For adults there are 5 belts: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. For children the belt system can vary by age depending on the school. Our adult students follow the IBJJF belt ranking system.

  • Is there a belt rank test and, if so, do you charge testing fees?

No, we do not charge belt rank testing fees for adults. We charge only a small fee for children.

  • Do you teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at Mohler MMA?

The answer to this is both yes and no. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu both come from the same source. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is comprised of a specific curriculum from which the system is taught. At Mohler MMA, we have our own curriculum. However, both curriculums are from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. So technically we are all teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  • I am recovering from an injury but my doctor has cleared me to train. Can I work into your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes slowly?

Absolutely. We can work around any limitations you may have, as long as you make the instructors aware of any exercises, drills or techniques that are causing pain or discomfort.

  • I am over 40 years old. Am I too old to participate in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes?

No, many of our top students are over 40. As long as you make sure to work within your own abilities and give yourself time to recover, you will do great. Remember, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is based on technique and leverage, not athleticism or youth. Train smarter, not harder!
